How to Write a UGC Ad Script (Template and 3 Full Examples)
Updated by the UGC Ads team
A UGC ad script is a short plan, usually 15 to 30 seconds, for a phone-style video ad: a hook in the first one to three seconds, the problem, the product in use, a reason to believe, and one call to action. Write it with timing next to every line and a shot for every line. Below is a fill-in template and three complete scripts you can adapt.
The five beats of a UGC ad script
| Beat | Time (30s ad) | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | 0-3s | Stop the scroll. Make the right person keep watching. |
| Problem | 3-8s | Name the frustration or desire the viewer already has. |
| Product in use | 8-18s | Show the product doing the thing. Show, do not describe. |
| Reason to believe | 18-24s | A detail, demo or fact from your product page that makes it credible. |
| Call to action | 24-30s | Tell them exactly what to do next. |
For a 15-second ad, compress it: hook 0-2s, problem plus product 2-10s, reason to believe 10-12s, call to action 12-15s.
UGC ad script template

LENGTH: [15 / 30] seconds
0-3s HOOK
Say: "[hook line]"
Show: [opening shot, ideally movement or the product in frame]
Caption: [3-6 words]
3-8s PROBLEM
Say: "[the frustration in the viewer's words]"
Show: [the problem happening]
8-18s PRODUCT IN USE
Say: "[what it does, in plain words]"
Show: [close-up of product being used, 2-3 quick shots]
18-24s REASON TO BELIEVE
Say: "[a specific detail: material, how it works, what's included]"
Show: [proof shot: texture, label, demo]
24-30s CALL TO ACTION
Say: "[exact action + reason to do it now, if true]"
Show: [product + person, or product page on screen]
Caption: [the action]

Rules that make scripts work
- One message. If you have three benefits, make three ads.
- Short sentences. Spoken scripts sound natural at 5 to 12 words per sentence.
- Every line needs a shot. If nothing on screen matches what is said, the viewer drifts.
- Use the viewer’s words. Pull phrases from your reviews, DMs and support emails.
- Only claim what you can back up. If your product page does not support it, do not say it.
- Specific call to action. “Tap Shop Now to see all six colors” beats “check it out”.
- Captions on every line. Assume many people watch on mute.
Example script 1: Problem then solution (30 seconds)
Product: a leak-proof stainless steel lunch container Viewer: people who carry lunch to work One message: soups and sauces stay inside the container, not in your bag Voice: brand demo, presenter shows the product
| Time | Say | Show | Caption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-2s | “Don’t put soup in your bag until you’ve seen this.” | Presenter holds a full container upside down over a laptop bag | Soup. Upside down. |
| 2-5s | “Most lunch boxes leak the second they tip over.” | Quick cut: a regular container tipped, liquid spilling (staged) | The usual result |
| 5-8s | “This one has a silicone seal and four locking clips.” | Close-up: fingers snapping each clip shut | 4 locking clips |
| 8-14s | “Fill it, lock it, shake it.” | Presenter fills with soup, locks it, shakes it hard | Shake test |
| 14-18s | “Nothing comes out.” | Container held upside down, then dabbed with a paper towel, towel stays dry | Still dry |
| 18-23s | “It’s stainless steel, so it doesn’t hold smells, and the seal pops out to wash.” | Seal removed, rinsed under tap | Seal pops out to clean |
| 23-27s | “Two sizes, and they stack in the fridge.” | Two sizes stacked | 2 sizes |
| 27-30s | “Tap Shop Now to pick your size.” | Container dropped into bag, bag zipped | Tap Shop Now |
Why it works: the hook is a visual promise, and the middle proves it on camera instead of asking you to trust it.
Example script 2: Three ways to use it (25 seconds)
Product: a large lightweight linen scarf Viewer: women who want versatile travel pieces One message: one scarf replaces three items in your suitcase Voice: styling demo
| Time | Say | Show | Caption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-2s | “One scarf, three outfits. Watch.” | Scarf held up to camera, then flicked open | 1 scarf, 3 ways |
| 2-4s | “If you pack light, you need pieces that do more than one job.” | Small carry-on suitcase, half packed | Packing light? |
| 4-9s | “Way one: classic wrap for the plane.” | Scarf wrapped loosely around neck, seated near window | 1. Travel wrap |
| 9-14s | “Way two: tie it at the hip as a beach skirt.” | Scarf tied at hip over swimsuit | 2. Beach skirt |
| 14-19s | “Way three: shoulders at dinner when it gets cool.” | Scarf draped over shoulders with a dress, evening light | 3. Evening shawl |
| 19-22s | “It’s linen, so it breathes, and it folds down small.” | Scarf folded into a small square in the hand | Folds small |
| 22-25s | “Tap the link to see all the colors.” | All colors laid out flat | See all colors |
Why it works: each “way” is a mini payoff, so viewers keep watching to see the next one. No personal testimony is needed, which makes this format suitable for AI-made UGC-style video too.
Example script 3: Reply to a comment (20 seconds)
Product: a men’s stretch chino Viewer: men who find chinos stiff or tight One message: these chinos move with you Voice: brand presenter answering a real customer question
| Time | Say | Show | Caption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-2s | “Someone asked if these are actually comfortable. Let’s test it.” | On-screen comment bubble with the question (a real comment, used with permission) | “Are these comfy?” |
| 2-5s | “Regular chinos fight you when you sit or squat.” | Presenter squats in stiff trousers, fabric pulling | Stiff fabric |
| 5-11s | “These have stretch in the weave. Squat, lunge, sit cross-legged.” | Same moves in the stretch chinos, easy movement | Squat. Lunge. Sit. |
| 11-15s | “Still look sharp afterward.” | Stands up, full-length shot, no bagging at knees | Still sharp |
| 15-17s | “Five colors, regular and slim fit.” | Quick cut through colors | 5 colors, 2 fits |
| 17-20s | “Tap Shop Now and find your fit.” | Presenter walks toward camera | Tap Shop Now |
Why it works: answering a real question signals that the brand listens, and the demo answers it better than words can. Only use real comments, with permission, and never invent one.
Script length guide
| Length | Spoken words (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 6-10s | 15-25 | One hook plus one visual payoff, Stories |
| 15s | 35-40 | Simple products, retargeting |
| 20-30s | 50-75 | Products that need a demo |
| 30-45s | 75-110 | Higher-priced items with more objections |
These word counts assume a relaxed speaking pace. Read your script out loud with a timer, since that is the only count that matters.
Script mistakes to avoid
- Starting with the brand name. Open with the viewer’s problem or a visual surprise instead.
- Listing features. Pick the one that answers the main objection.
- No shot plan. A script that is only words becomes a talking head with nothing to look at.
- Fake testimony. Do not script a creator or AI character to claim results they did not have. See UGC disclosure and usage rights.
- One version only. Always write at least three hooks for the same body.

Questions people ask
How long should a UGC ad script be?
Most UGC ad scripts run 15 to 30 seconds, which is roughly 35 to 75 spoken words at a relaxed pace. Start short. You can always test a longer version once you know which hook works.
What is the structure of a UGC ad script?
Hook, problem, product in use, proof or reason to believe, and call to action. The hook takes the first 1 to 3 seconds, and the call to action takes the last 2 to 4.
Should UGC scripts be word for word?
For hired creators, give the hook and call to action word for word and let them say the middle in their own words, so it sounds natural. For AI-made UGC-style video, write the full script so you control every claim.
What is a good UGC ad script template?
0-3s hook, 3-8s problem, 8-18s product in use, 18-24s reason to believe, 24-30s call to action. Each line should have a matching shot, and captions should repeat the key words.
Can I use a testimonial-style script with an AI character?
No. A script that says 'I bought this and it worked for me' should only be used by a real customer describing their real experience. For an AI character, use demo, styling or how-to scripts instead.
